My Experience Buying a Pre-Built Gaming PC
My ASUS TUF F15 Gaming Laptop had been my primary rig for over 3 years. I got it when it was a new release, so the hardware is still fairly modern. It has a 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700H, which I upgraded from 16GB to 32GB of DDR5-4800 RAM, two NVMe SSDs (it came with a 1TB drive and I added another 2TB, which I have since swapped with the 256GB NVMe SSD in my $500 Steam Machine build), and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 with 6GB of VRAM.
Overall, it is still a very capable machine, with the exception of having only 6GB of VRAM.
Because laptops are not usually modular, that 6GB of VRAM is a permanent specification that was starting to affect how high I could push visual settings in newer games.
I had also been using this laptop regularly for long gaming sessions for over 3 years. While the laptop is still in excellent condition and I have cleaned the fans regularly, it still runs hot, and over time, sustained heat can shorten the lifespan of components.
I had been itching for an upgrade and looking at components to build myself a new desktop gaming PC. I hadn’t built a gaming PC in over a decade.
Desktop PCs are modular, naturally have better cooling than laptops, and cleaning is as easy as removing a side panel.
I had been building my dream setup(s) across various online wish lists and shopping carts, but I had yet to pull the trigger on anything.
I have something that I like to call “analysis paralysis,” where I take a VERY long time researching my options and trying my best to know that I am making the right purchase. It doesn’t matter what that purchase might be, even if it is just a $5 item. I want to know that I am making the right decision.
At any rate, it was November of 2025, and while hardware prices were still reasonable compared to what they are now as I write this in August of 2026, PC hardware prices, especially RAM and SSDs, were starting to rise.
Prices were forecasted to get much worse before they got better, and I was stuck with a powerful but aging laptop due to its 6GB VRAM limitation while my dream builds were still scattered across the interwebs.
Then it happened.
I was lying in bed one morning, scrolling on my phone, ever searching for deals that I cannot pass up, when I finally found one.
I bought it immediately before it could go out of stock.
No analysis paralysis this time because I KNEW it was a good deal, even if I ended up reselling it once the warranty expired.

I basically got all of that, along with a pre-built system warranty, for what I could have paid for just the CPU and GPU at the time.
At today’s hardware prices, I am still laughing at this deal.
This PC solved all of my needs and allowed me to retire the laptop for when I actually need a laptop instead of continuing to stress it with gaming sessions.
With the 7800X3D CPU, 32GB of high-speed DDR5 RAM, and RTX 5070, it has performed flawlessly with every game, benchmark, and stress test I have put it through.
Where Pre-Built PCs Cut Corners
One thing buyers need to understand about pre-built PCs is that compromises have to be made somewhere.
That does not mean system integrators are using bad components. It means they are balancing performance, availability, and cost.
When building your own PC, every component can be selected specifically for your needs. A pre-built system is designed to hit a price point while still delivering the performance customers expect.
The iBUYPOWER Element Pro is a great example of this.
SSD
This is a place where nearly all system integrators have to make compromises.
Not because they are necessarily using low-quality or unreliable components, but because when you are chasing maximum performance, careful selection of every component matters.
The spec sheet lists a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, but that is all it says.
My specific machine included a Western Digital Green 1TB SN3000, which is perfectly fine for storing documents and general everyday use. However, when you are trying to load games that are now frequently over 100GB in size, you start noticing the difference between an entry-level office PC drive and a higher-end SSD.
When your OS is constantly waiting for a WD Green drive to respond, it slows the whole system.
Fortunately, I had also picked up a 2TB Samsung 990 EVO Plus M.2 NVMe SSD as a Christmas (2025) gift to myself before prices skyrocketed. I moved the SN3000 to the secondary M.2 slot and installed the new Samsung SSD into the primary M.2 slot.
On many motherboards, the primary M.2 slot connects directly to the CPU instead of through the chipset, allowing the drive to use dedicated PCIe lanes with potentially better latency and bandwidth compared to secondary slots.
After reinstalling the operating system onto the faster Samsung SSD, I noticed significantly shorter loading times.
RAM
The RAM is another example of where a pre-built system has to make compromises.
On paper, 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM sounds excellent, and it is. However, the specific kit included in my system runs at CL48 latency, which is higher than what I would have selected if I was building this PC myself.
Could lower latency RAM provide better performance? Absolutely.
Did iBUYPOWER need to spend more money on a better RAM kit for this system? Probably not.
The Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a massive 96MB of L3 cache thanks to AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology. Unlike traditional CPUs, where the cache is located only within the standard CPU design, AMD stacks additional cache directly onto the processor to dramatically increase the amount of data the CPU can access quickly.
That extra cache can reduce how often the CPU needs to access system RAM in many gaming workloads, which helps reduce the impact of slower memory latency.
I believe iBUYPOWER made a calculated decision here. They included DDR5-6000 memory, which is an important specification for this platform, without spending extra money on a premium low-latency kit that would provide minimal real-world gains in most gaming scenarios.
This reminds me of my Ryzen 7 3700X build paired with an RX 6600 XT. Could I have chosen a faster CPU? Sure. But it would not have made sense for the overall system.
The included RAM is not what I would have selected if I was building this PC myself, but it gets the job done, and I have not seen it hold back performance in any meaningful way.
Keyboard
I am still using the keyboard.
I like that it is wired, so I do not have to worry about replacing batteries, and the keys have a great feel.
It feels more like a smooth typewriter than some of today’s low-profile keyboards.
There is no mistaking whether or not you have pressed a key, and I give the keyboard a 7/10.
It would be rated much lower if it wasn’t included “free” with the PC because it lacks any bells and whistles, and the shortcut/FN key functions are in awkward locations and combined with the F1, F2, etc. keys.
Overall, I am still using it because I have not come across anything better that I want to spend money on.
Mouse
Absolute garbage.
The clicks are loud and have an inconsistent feel. The housing feels very cheap, with awful internal RGB effects that do not have any specific zones but instead randomly glow through the smoked transparent top shell.
It feels cheap and fragile in hand.
The mouse and keyboard RGB effects can only be controlled through HYTE Nexus software, which, as of my last attempt a couple of weeks ago, appears to have an issue where something related to logging or background activity causes constant writing activity to attached drives, including external USB hard drives.
Because of this, I cannot have synchronized effects on my mouse and keyboard.
I am no longer using the mouse and replaced it with a $14 wireless mouse from Amazon that feels 100 times better.
Fans
The fans, especially the AIO fans, are very noisy.
This is another area where a custom-built PC would allow me to choose exactly what components I wanted.
The cooling performance is excellent, but the noise level is something I would improve if I were building this system myself.
Final Thoughts: Are Pre-Built Gaming PCs Worth It?
For a long time, the common advice was that building your own PC was always cheaper. And for many years, that was absolutely true.
I still see people repeating that advice today, but the market has changed.
Large system integrators can purchase components in bulk, sometimes allowing them to sell a complete system for less than the cost of buying the same parts individually.
The tradeoff is customization.
When you build your own PC, every component is selected by you, for your specific needs. You choose the SSD, motherboard, cooler, power supply, fans, and every other detail.
A pre-built PC might deliver incredible performance at an incredible price, but there will almost always be areas where the manufacturer saves money.
You won’t necessarily be able to determine which components are included in your pre-built system unless you have the uncommon opportunity to inspect it before you buy. Most of these systems come from big box stores or online retailers where it’s kind of like playing the lottery on which specific components you receive, but with much better odds.
You know you aren’t really losing because the system will match the advertised specifications. However, you should expect that some cost cutting will happen in areas that you may or may not care about.
