Should You Buy a GPU With Only 4GB VRAM In 2026?

We're back at the virtual workbench today with an exceptionally virtual review. The reason I say that is because neither I nor anyone else has this product in their hands yet. It hasn't even been released. However, that hasn't stopped everyone from talking about it.
It was recently reported by Digital Foundry that leaks point to AMD releasing a new Radeon RX 9050 in two variations: one with 4GB of VRAM and another with 8GB.
Before we go any further, I want to point out that this entire article is based on early information, leaks, and speculation. My opinions are based on what we know today and are absolutely subject to change once independent reviews are available and we see what kinds of systems the 4GB version actually ends up in. Hopefully those systems aren't being marketed as gaming PCs.
Most tech reviewers and magazines are already dogging on both versions of this GPU, but I want to approach it a little differently. I actually think there is still a place for an 8GB graphics card in 2026. What I'm much more interested in is whether a 4GB dedicated graphics card still makes sense when modern APUs have become so capable. At what point are you paying extra for a dedicated GPU that could end up being held back by only having 4GB of VRAM and a 64-bit memory bus?
That's what I want to explore. Not whether AMD should have made this card, but what buyers should realistically expect from it. More importantly, I want to make sure nobody buys a computer simply because the box says "Radeon RX" and expects it to deliver a modern gaming experience if the hardware inside isn't really designed for that.
So let's take a look at what we know so far and see if either version of the RX 9050 deserves a spot in your next PC... or if one of them is simply goat food.
So why am I so concerned about 4GB of VRAM?
The short answer is that games have changed.
Not that long ago, 4GB of VRAM was enough for a budget gaming PC. You could play just about anything at 1080p with a few settings turned down and still have a pretty good experience. Fast forward to today, and many newer AAA games are already pushing the limits of 8GB of VRAM if you want higher quality textures. Some games will even warn you when you're trying to use settings that exceed the available video memory.
That doesn't automatically make a 4GB graphics card useless. It just means expectations need to change.
If your goal is to play older games, esports titles, indie games, or you're simply looking for a computer that can handle everyday tasks while driving a few monitors, a 4GB graphics card may be perfectly fine. In fact, that may be exactly why AMD is offering it as an OEM-only option.
Gaming is where I start asking questions.
When a graphics card runs out of VRAM, it doesn't just stop working. It has to start moving data around more often instead of keeping everything stored in its own high-speed memory. That's when you can start seeing texture pop-in, inconsistent frame times, or having to lower settings just to stay within the card's limits. Personally, I'd rather play at a steady 45 FPS than watch the frame rate bounce all over the place because the graphics card is constantly running out of room.
That's also why I don't think average frame rate tells the whole story. A benchmark might show perfectly acceptable numbers, but if the game constantly stutters because it's struggling with memory, that's not the experience most people expect when they buy a computer with dedicated graphics.
The other thing worth mentioning is that the leaked specifications suggest the 4GB and 8GB versions may be more different than just memory capacity. Current reports indicate the 4GB model may use a 64-bit memory bus while the 8GB version uses a 128-bit bus. If that's true, you're not simply cutting the amount of VRAM in half. You're potentially buying a very different graphics card that also has significantly less memory bandwidth.
Again, we'll have to wait for independent testing to know exactly how much that affects real-world performance.
I also don't want this article to come across as me telling everyone to avoid the RX 9050. I actually think the 8GB version could end up being a perfectly reasonable budget graphics card depending on its price and performance. My concern is almost entirely focused on the 4GB model and the expectations people might have if they see it in a prebuilt computer.
That's really the point of this article.
I'm not trying to review a graphics card that nobody has tested yet. I'm trying to encourage people to look past the marketing on the side of the box. Just because a computer says "Radeon RX Graphics" doesn't automatically mean it's going to deliver the gaming experience you're hoping for.
As soon as these cards become available, I'll be taking another look at them. If the 4GB version surprises me, I'll be the first one to admit it. If it performs exactly the way I think it might, hopefully this article helped a few people avoid buying the wrong computer for their needs.
Until then, I think it's fair to say this: if you're shopping specifically for a gaming PC in 2026, I'd be very cautious about buying any system equipped with only 4GB of VRAM until independent reviews have had a chance to put it through its paces.
